Gas exchange involves the removal of unwanted gases (degassing) or the introduction of gases (gassing) into the water. This process is used for a variety of applications, such as the introduction of oxygen for oxidation or biological processes or the removal of interfering gases (carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, methane, etc.).
Both degassing and gassing are mass transfer processes that take place through the liquid-gas phase interface, i.e. in which molecules of the substance to be exchanged pass from one phase to the other. The gas exchange takes place until an equilibrium (corresponding to the saturation concentrations of the respective phases) is reached.
